What's the difference between an "attenuator" and a "volume controller"?

Some products are called attenuators and others volume controls. Is there a difference?

They're the same thing. An attenuator reduces the voltage level of a signal; lower voltage means lower loudness at the amplifier/speaker. Most attenuators are resistor-based voltage dividers -- a potentiometer is the most common type. Tortuga Audio uses LDRs to do the same job, for better sound.
