I keep seeing "LDR" in descriptions of Tortuga Audio preamps. What is an LDR, and how does it control volume?

An LDR pairs a light emitting diode (LED) with a photoresistor in a small sealed package, about the size of an M&M candy, with 2 pairs of wires -- one running current through the LED, the other forming the variable resistor of the photoresistor. Resistance is inversely proportional to the LED's light intensity: more light, less resistance, and vice versa.
